Swedish Romantic composer Franz Berwald’s Grand Septet builds on short thematic fragments that often mimic village tunes and dances. Ferde Grofé, best known for his Grand Canyon Suite, wrote the apt-named Table d’hôte: Humoresque in 1945, dispelling the anxiety of the war years. The duets of Polish composer and violinist Grażyna Bacewicz feature songs from her native country and 2013 Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw’s distinctive voice is heard in the Colorado premiere of her Ritornello for string quartet.
